Steve Jobs explains the rules for success

Steven Job explains:

You need a lot of passion for what you’re doing because its so hard. Without passion, any rational person would give up.

So if youre not having fun doing it, if you dont absolutely love it, youre going to give up. And thats what happens to most people, actually.

If you look at the ones that ended up being successful in the eyes of society, often times its the ones who love what they do, so they could persevere when it got really tough. And the ones that didnt love it, quit. Because theyre sane, right?
Who would put up with this stuff if you dont love it?

So its a lot of hard work and its a lot of worrying constantly.
If you dont love it, youre going to fail.

Steve Jobs’ Vision of the World

Steve Jobs understood from the beginning that excellence is rarely achieved by walking down the path of conformity.

The world as Steve Jobs saw it:

“When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and you’re life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.

That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.”

What do you want to do before you die?

Good = Create a Bucket list of 100 things you want to do before you die.
Better = Live your life doing everything on your Bucket list.
Best = For every item on your list that you accomplish, you help someone else accomplish one of their biggest dreams.

Guess what? Four regular guys are on a mission to complete their list of 100 things to do before they die. And it’s a reality TV show called “The Buried Life.”

Ben, Dave, Duncan and Jonnie left home in the summer of 2006 to complete an epic list of 100 things to do before you die. For every item they accomplish they help a stranger do something they have always dreamed of.

Gabor Mate – ADHD, Bullying, and the Destruction of American Childhood

Part 1

A spike in diagnoses of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other mental disorders has fueled an unprecedented reliance on pharmaceutical medications to treat children, with long-term effects that remain unknown.

Canadian physician and best-selling author, Dr. Gabor Maté argues that these responses are treating surface symptoms as causes while ignoring deeper roots.

He says children are in fact reacting to the broader collapse of the nurturing conditions needed for their healthy development.

Living Beyong Limits: Amy Purdy

Amy Purdy talks about the power of imagination. She explains how our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but by the choices we make. Imagination allows us to break down borders, to move beyond our circumstances, to create and constantly progress.

Amy Purdy has been through hardships that most of us will never face — or can even fathom. But what makes her story so incredible is not that fact that she lived a “normal” childhood and spent her high school years as a passionate artist and snowboarder, then traumatically lost both her legs at age 19, but how she has persevered, taking implausible challenges and rising above them.

Today, Amy is an athlete; currently the top ranked adaptive female snowboarder in the world. Amy also spends a good amount of time helping others; specifically those with physical challenges get involved with snowboarding, skateboarding, wakeboarding and other action sports through the organization she co-founded Adaptive Action Sports. Challenging herself while making a positive impact on the world is a true testament to Amy’s spirit.

Bono Tells Graduates “Pick a Fight, Get in It” (2004)

Speaking to Penn’s graduating class of 2004, Bono didn’t give the usual advice — go forth and follow your passion.

No, the message was a little different.

He urged the graduates to serve their age by betraying it, by “exposing its conceits, it’s foibles, it’s phony moral certitudes … and massive moral blindspots,” Africa being perhaps the most glaring example.

Then, his speech wraps up with this, the best lines saved for last.

“Whether it’s this or something else, I hope you’ll pick a fight and get in it. Get your boots dirty, get rough, steel your courage…, make one last primal scream, and go. Sing the melody line you hear in your own head. Remember, you don’t owe anybody any explanations. You don’t owe your parents any explanations. You don’t owe your professors any explanations.

You know I used to think the future was solid or fixed, something you inherited like an old building that you move into when the previous generation moves out or gets chased out. But it’s not. The future is not fixed, it’s fluid. You can build your own building, or hut or condo.

My point is that the world is more malleable than you think, and it’s waiting for you to hammer it into shape…. That’s what this degree of yours is, a blunt instrument. So go forth and build something with it. Remember what John Adams said about Ben Franklin, “He does not hesitate at our boldest measures but rather seems to think us too irresolute.” Well this is the time for bold measures and this is the country and you are the generation.”

Transcript of Bono’s speech.
